Part 1
Ashley throws her locker open and begins an impatient search for painkillers. She was sure she’d seen some in here a couple of weeks ago, but she’d shoved another huge pile of textbooks in since then, and organisation has never been one of her strong points.
“Stupid books.” Ashley mutters as a rogue few tumble out and land at her feet.
The source of her search isn’t helping matters either; a niggling headache that has set up camp right behind her eyes. She never gets headaches, and the thought that this could be the first sign that she’s caught the nasty flu bug making it’s way around King High School makes her search for pain relief even more frenzied.
“Whatcha doing?” Spencer asks curiously, her head peeking over Ashley’s shoulder from behind.
“Oh, uh, nothing.” Ashley slams her locker shut quickly, before any more crap can fall out and Spencer works out what she’s up to. “Just waiting for you.”
“How sweet.” Spencer smiles, before bending down to pick up the fallen books. “Hey, isn’t this my History book you said you didn’t have?”
“Oops?” Ashley offers with a wince; Spencer rolls her eyes.
“It doesn’t matter, I know your locker’s like the Bermuda Triangle.”
“Yeah, tell me about it.” Ashley agrees gruffly with a miserable rub of her forehead.
“So I told Mom you’d be over for dinner at about seven tonight.” Spencer continues obliviously, her bright blue eyes locking suddenly with Ashley’s brown. “Um, you are still coming aren’t you?”
“Yeah, of course.” Presently Ashley can’t think of anywhere worse to be going tonight if this headache sticks around, but she’s promised Spencer and she can’t let her down.
“She even said she’d make the couch up for you, if you want to stay?”
“Maybe.” Ashley shrugs uneasily; normally she’d have jumped at the chance and her response elicits a small frown of concern from Spencer.
“Don’t be nervous about my Mom, okay? The whole point of tonight is that she gets to know you better, and once she sees how great you are I promise she’ll stop giving us such a hard time.”
“Until she finds out we’re dating.” Ashley points out irritably, her mood dampening more and more by the minute.
“Did you skip out on your coffee this morning or something?” Spencer teases lightly, her spare hand seeking out Ashley’s for a gentle squeeze.
“It’s just been a long week that’s all.” Ashley sighs, her attention diverting to a sudden fuzzy tickle in her nose.
“Ash, it’s only Wednesday!” Ignoring Spencer’s disbelief, Ashley yanks her hand free and turns away, squeezing her eyes shut as she struggles to force the tickle to recede. “Are you alright?”
Ashley barely manages a small nod before her mouth gulps in a quick pull of air.
“Hih-ngnx!” The sneeze, to her relief, is small and dry but what worries her more is how many will follow. Even as a child she could never sneeze just once, they always came in two or more and her Mom always made such a big deal out of it that it was probably one of the only things Ashley ever felt self-conscious about.
“Bless you!” Spencer sings as Ashley steadies herself against her locker.
“Huh-ngnnnx! Sorry.” Ashley apologises, rubbing her nose roughly on the palm of her hand as she turns back around. “The sun just got in my eyes.”
“Oh I hate that.” Spencer sympathises as Ashley begins to sniffle, the pain in her head now even worse than before. “Well I suppose at least one of us should get to class, but I‘ll see you later?”
“Sure.” Ashley forces a smile, relieved that she’ll finally be able to continue her search for the much needed medicine in peace.
“And don’t worry about tonight, everything’s going to be fine.”
“Yeah, I hope so…” Ashley mumbles.
