Can you control how much of your sneeze comes from your nose/mouth?

When you sneeze, do you have control over how much of the air comes from your nose vs your mouth?  I'd always noticed that some of my sneezes just seemed to come a lot more from my nose than others, which were almost entirely from my mouth (I pay attention to my sneezes way too much).   Since the reason we sneeze is to get irritating or harmful things out of our noses,  it makes sense that a good portion of the air should be expelled from our noses.  With that in mind, I've started purposely trying to make my sneezes come more from my nose (though still with a lot of it from my mouth), and it now feels like the normal way to do it.  I've found that sneezing that way actually feels a lot more satisfying, natural, and that I usually only sneeze once in a row.  The only downside is they're often messy.  Do any of you guys do this kind of thing, or am I even weirder than I thought? :P

lol well I don't really put too much thought into it. Though I don't feel like I have much control over its power, none of mine would thankfully offer any mess.

I actually try to do that as well :'D

If I have to sneeze suddenly, it's nearly entirely from my mouth and sounds completely different to my 'controlled' sneezes. They're also faster and seem to clear rather my throat than my nose. I don't manage to control them that often, though. Only when I have time to notice that I'm about to sneeze. I can even fail while doing that and produce some kind of strange cough-like sound which is not relieving at all and makes my nose even more itchy. Or, even worse, lose the sneeze. But if I manage, it feels way more relieving and really sounds like a sneeze should sound like.

When I have a cold, they come naturally rather from my nose (which does make sense), unless my nose is completely stuffed. Then it's this really painful throaty sneeze which I cannot control at all. And it doesn't even sound like a real sneeze. I just don't get it

I'm glad I'm not the only one! :P

I know exactly what you mean about it feeling way more relieving.

(I waited for some sneezes before responding to check)

I think my sneezes are pretty half and half, evenly split between my mouth and nose. It was difficult to control one way or the other but I sort of got it. I tried to do a more mouth one and it was unsatisfying but it sounded different and had more spray than usual. The one I managed to get more through my nose made me glad I don’t sneeze like that regularly because it was dramatically messy and sounded weird.

I'm going to try this.  I would say atleast 80% is with my mouth.

I don't know if my nasal cavity is misshaped or what, but I always sneeze out of my mouth (and therefor never through my nose). Strange really 😅

I sneeze almost completely from my mouth too :)

Once I've drawn in breath, I then close my mouth completely and stifle, which presumably makes it 100% through the nose.

(although stifling removes the element relating to expelling air during the sneeze, so I don't know if that helps in relation to your original post or not)

There's then a release of breath, which I think is usually through my mouth.

Most of my normal sneezes were almost entirely from my mouth too, and almost never had any mess, just lots of spray.  I'd always read that we sneeze to get things out of our noses, that the air's supposed to come from both our nose and mouth, which makes complete sense.  Some of the blast of air's meant to blow out the irritant.  But mine didn't usually seem to do that.  The tickle would to go away after two or three sneezes, but not because anything was expelled.  Whatever particle or irritant in my nose made me sneeze would still be there inside.  That's why I started trying to change them.  With practice, I've been able to make a lot more of the air pass through my nose as I sneeze, though well over half of it still comes from my mouth.  The only downside is that there's always a chance of mess.  My personal theory is that a lot of us subconsciously train ourselves to sneeze only with out mouths to avoid messy situations.

There was a thread on this back in April 2007 (under the title “Nose or Mouth?”) and another sometime later. I found then that I was very much in the minority in preferring to sneeze through my nose without stifling. It seems to me that adults (but not children) naturally sneeze orally, which puzzles me because I would think sneezing has evolved to eliminate nasal irritants, and mouth sneezing doesn’t seem to achieve this. I think my preference is linked to my love of nose blowing.

I totally agree.  Sneezes are caused by something irritating the inside of our nose.  That something is usually a foreign particle that's stuck to our nose's lining.  The goal of sneezing is definitely to get those irritating foreign particles out of our nose.  Sneezing entirely through our mouths defeats that whole purpose.  I think a lot of people (myself formerly included) sneeze that way because they've unintentionally trained themselves to.  We can subconsciously influence the way we sneeze, and I think people get into the habit of sneezing only from their mouths in order to prevent any mess coming from their nose.

I've also found through practising that if I'm intending to sneeze through the nose, holding my breath just before the sneeze erupts can make it more uncomfortable or even painful, whereas breathing out gently  - in effect blowing my nose - as I sneeze is a lot kinder to my nasal system. Of course, this requires you to sneeze into something rather than uncovered, which could be very messy!

If you're sneezing entirely out of your nose, I can certainly see why you'd want to reduce the forcefulness!  That's a huge amount of pressure!  My sneezes are far from gentle, but my nose doesn't take the full force of it.  A lot of the air still blasts out of my mouth.  But the portion that comes from my nose definitely does make them messy sometimes.

I have a small inhale through my nose, but I mostly sneeze through my mouth. I think it’s interesting that I sneeze through my mouth but still usually have some mucus expelled from my nose.

I tend to sneeze mostly from my mouth but if I close my mouth then I can make it come out of my nose. This always ends up making my sneezes messy though.

If I'm alone I let it go I would say at least 90% from my mouth.  If I'm in public I tend to hold more in so more from my nose but I'm super covered up.  I really don't like it anyone noticing when I sneeze and saying God bless you.  I feel weird and run off to the washroom even if there isn't any kind of mess.
